IMA 2018 Charity Campaign

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County

IMA has partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County for the 2018 Summit philanthropic initiative. Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18, in communities across the country. As members of the IMA, we have an opportunity to impact the lives of children within the Orange County community, the county of IMA's 2018 Summit location: Newport Beach, CA. IMA will raise donations of cash, gift cards, and merchandise which will be invested toward the nonprofit's youth mentoring program.

Cash and merchandise will be used to support silent auctions and other fundraising events; gift card donations will be used for volunteers to take their Littles on outings.

Testimonials

Katia Salcedo, who participated as a Little at the IMA summit session, wrote the following words about her experience:

"During the Marketing Exercise I learned to think out of the box and in a less formulaic structure (which is not all that common for a STEM student.) I learned to see things from a different point of view to see which strategies would be the most effective — specifically seeing through the eyes of a consumer while acting as a sales rep. These two skills helped me realize that the kind of empathetic problem-solving my teachers tell me about are actually useful and common in the ‘real world.’

In school, I am challenging myself with multiple AP classes in order to ‘market' myself to colleges more effectively :). In all seriousness, AP Physics and AP Calc, while proving to be quite the challenge, are going well and aiding me in developing my problem solving/engineering skills. Meanwhile, Ceramics and AP Language are the perfect classes for using my creative thinking ability to see the world from a less strict and structured angle. All this has helped me teach these skills to my Little as she develops her own problem-solving skills, vocabulary and reading fluency.

While she has been improving by leaps and bounds in her math and reading skills, I find that she often gets confused by strictly linear explanations and often find myself coming up with different ways to help her understand the complexities of division (there are more than you think). We still joke around and discuss puppies and roller coasters and through that I have noticed a definite confidence boost. She makes direct eye contact and she doesn’t inch away when she doesn’t know an answer. Instead she has begun to confidently raise her hand and ask — knowing full-well that our Program Specialist and myself will do our absolute best to help.

All in all, I would like to thank the IMA for the wonderful opportunity I was afforded. Though it was over all too quickly, I truly learned a lot and will always cherish the memory.”
